Me & My Handmade Manifesto

There is only one thing worth knowing about me: I am Generally Awesome.

There is only one thing you need to know about yourself as it relates to me: if you KNOW ME, you probably are AWESOME BY ASSOCIATION.

My awesome life has become increasingly complicated over the years - not for any dramatic or particularly interesting reasons - just because it has. Realistically this is something that most responsible, civic adults face. I'm convinced that work-life balance is a myth and catchphrase.  So I've stopped worrying about it and decided to take what I can get. This means that I have a limited amount of free time and I simply must decide how I use it. I like to read and I enjoy cooking and baking. I also have developed a taste for crafting - in the more traditional scrap-booking sense - which has blossomed into stamping, card-making, and related crafts. This taste has been amplified by my desire to just simply make things.

Something you will notice in this collection of ideas and projects is that I don't make things to save money. Nor do I make things to streamline a process or save time (except for my freezer and foodsaver!).

I make things to revel in the delight of the handmade
and to share that joy with others.

Another thing worth mentioning is that along with that busy life comes a decrease in the amount of time I have to spend with the people I love. In a past life, I would express love and appreciation by treating them to dinner or drinks, having a party that I've spent time cooking and baking, or simply volunteering to help with something. Faced with this inverse relationship between my desire to show my love and appreciation and the amount of time I have to express it - I've turned to creating homemade gifts.

What I've learned so far is that anyone can accomplish handmade.  I'm not particularly gifted at making things - but I do learn quickly and normally can suppress my scatterbrain-ness long enough to get through a project.  My only natural gift is my near-photographic memory and ability to recall things, which is helpful to learning so that I can remember what to do or not to do later.

I do not have any strong feelings other than "anyone can accomplish handmade".  I'm neither militant or political about it.  You can accomplish handmade, but you may not want to.  And that is OK.  You may want to do nothing but handmade - that is OK as well.
